My neighbors behind our house keep a few chickens in their backyard. Since they don’t have a rooster (for which I am eternally grateful) I find it rather charming. E and I like to stand on our porch and watch the chickens run around their yard.
Yesterday afternoon we had a surprise: this pretty hen hopped over the fence and came to visit. Isn’t she gorgeous?
She IS gorgeous… although seeing her totally reminded me of the days when we lived in Bangladesh and our cooks would go to the market, buy live chickens… and the chickens would cluck and hang out (with a leash around their legs) in the front yard… until the cooks would pick the one for dinner… and well, you get the idea. 🙂 I heard a cute story on NPR couple months ago about rogue urban chicken coop keepers. I guess they're technically illegal, at least here in Miami.
I think perhaps you would be interested in this, no?:

How fun! We have lots of animals to watch in our backyard–mostly birds and chipmunks and squirrels, though. Sometimes a bunny or a skunk, and once a coyote. No hens to speak of–that would be a surprise.
Whoa! What kind of chicken is that?? In the Philippines, everyone had chickens…including roosters. Whoever said roosters only crow when the sun rises is a darned LIAR!!!!
I didn't know chickens could be so pretty!
